The quirky balconies, looming over our everyday life in all their (un)beauty, found themselves in the focus of Oleksandr Burlaka’s lens.
Balcony Chic tells the story of illegally installed balconies and showcases the various ways they are used in people’s lives.
What was initially conceived as a recreational space for fresh air and sunbathing, and later transformed into a multifunctional space for survival, was presented in the first edition.
Now, in the context of the full-scale invasion, shelling, and power outages, balconies remain a not entirely safe but useful necessity for many Ukrainians. People are once again rethinking their balcony spaces, installing, for example, solar panels for backup power or Starlink for a stable internet connection.
The updated edition includes photographs from the first edition and is supplemented with examples of balcony destruction caused by shelling in Kyiv.
